Melancholy Scientist is a collection of poems about writing poetry, and about making music and art and dance and trouble. Edwin Dobb referred to the scientific method as a “modest device.” Poetry is another modest device for interpreting the world as we find it.

Amsterdam, Havana, Ireland and Saskatchewan are among the local and distant places these poems wander. The work approaches the poem from different directions, including synesthetic translations, elegies, self-portraits, blues, longer poems and even a half-sonnet. The poems stand, like Issa’s scarecrow, leaning into the wind, heart open, where “the music of the breath is enough to dance to.”
